Wow that MES is so pretty! Purple and black= BEST COLORS EVER!
I can't wait to try it out soon.:D I bet it's going to be GORGEOUS!:D -I'll definitely post when I do try it out.:)
Gorgeous! And how cool that they gave you a gift--perhaps I should stop by there in a couple of weeks? :P
I know!!:) - I didn't go in expecting to get anything except for a sample of some perfume and, hopefully, an empty sample tube. I didn't know about the free gift for my Birthday thing, so when she mentioned the things that Sephora does send out via the mail if you are a member, I hopped on the Birthday thing 'real' fast!;D -I checked my mail a little bit ago to see that I have a coupon waiting for me for this very same lip gloss set. I'd love to try to go in and get another one, but it's not honest and I don't see myself being able to get back out there before it expires in two weeks. Plus, I don't want to take the chance of running into the lady who handed this one to me. That'd be awkward and embarrassing.
Oh, you have two weeks? Even better, since our closest Sephora is a good 45 or so minutes away.
And yeah, that would definitely be awkward... I'd feel to guilty, too.
Great to know, thanks! :D
Did you get one, too? It's two weeks from the date of your birthday. -Sucks that your Sephora is so far away.:(
Hope you're able to get one of these, I really like them. They are shimmery without being 'over-the-top' glittery and they have a pleasant taste/smell to them, too.:) Also, they didn't feel sticky...which is really nice.:)
My birthday's not until Oct 11th so I still have some time.
DH isn't a fan of gloss for some reason, but too bad! I think they're cute (especially the last one). Now I just have to convince him it's worth it to drive all the way out there for free lip stuff, ha. Guess I should find something I "need"? :P
My guy isn't too big on the glosses either; when I lean in for a smooch he gives me the tiniest bit of lip he can possibly manage without actually just kissing the air between us -it's really funny and has become a game between us. As he leans further back I lean further in in an attempt to get more of my lipgloss/stick on him. *laughing* -He generally just wipes or licks the lip product off, but sometimes he doesn't. What I wear isn't very pigmented generally, so it's not like it's all that noticeable. He probably looks like he's just got some lip balm on or something.
For a 45min. drive? Yeah, I'd try to come up with something to pick up while you're there, just to make it more worth it. And I'd also come up with a small list of products you'd like to have some samples of: skin products, perfumes, primers, soaps, etc. Make a big deal out of it.:D I tend to feel a lot better about asking for samples if I'm actually buying something, too.:D
Oh yeah, the little lip glosses are cute. They are definitely mini...maybe an inch and a half long, possibly two...but no more than that. Hopefully they'll last me a while.:)
Haha yeah, if I have anything weird on my lips I usually get a kiss on the cheek. He especially hates my CG Outlast stuff... apparently he tastes something that I don't?
I think I came up with a reason! Victoria's Secret, enough said :P What guy won't THAT work on, right?
That was something else I was wondering about (sorry for asking 8 million questions >_<). How does getting samples work? You're right, I'd like to buy at least -something- so I don't feel like a mooch, lol. Do you just... ask for a sample of something? I've been in a Sephora ONCE, and I knew exactly what I wanted so I just ran in and out. I was intimidated, what can I say.
And can I just ask one of the MA's what my skintone is? I feel 5 having to ask that, but I'd like to know. I've never sat down at a counter before, so can I just ask them questions?
Don't worry about the questions -part of the reason I created this community: to help answer questions if I can, as well as, to ask questions if I don't know something. Or, hopefully, someone else can pipe up and answer some questions, too.:D
Yeah, just go up and ask. I was standing around in front of the wall of perfumes at Sephora and when one of the nearby employee's was done with her customer, I caught her eye and asked if I could get her help. When she came over I just nicely asked if I could get a sample of such-and-such perfume. She was really nice about it, too.:) She liked the perfume I requested, too, so she was sniffing it a bit. We both laughed over that.:)
At MAC I've had good and bad experiences in regards to asking for samples. When I first discovered the MAC counter in my Macy's dept. store I went in a couple of times and just asked for samples of various pigments but never bought anything. Mostly the MA's were friendly and didn't seem to have a problem doing it, but I had one who acted a little cold and I think it was because I wasn't purchasing anything. But I was just told in the MAC comm. that the MA's aren't working off of commission, so she really shouldn't have had an attitude about it. It's not like it's costing her any money or a sale. Now, I avoid her if I see her when I go in -which is, admittedly, rarely. Once I have a job again I hope to be in there more often and actually buying stuff.:D
As far as asking to be matched. I've never done it myself, but I imagine you just find an employee who isn't very busy and ask if someone (not necessarily that person) could help you in matching your skintone/shade. -I don't think you have to buy anything for that. I've read of many ladies going in and just asking without purchasing anything.
I know what you mean about feeling intimidated. I'm 27 now and I still feel inferior/intimidated around slimmer, younger, and more attractive girls/women. I feel like, since I've gained weight and don't wear name-brand fashions, I don't 'belong' in Sephora or MAC. It's really silly of me and I push myself to go in and try to make myself feel comfortable, anyway -I have as much right to be in there as anyone else, and my money/business is just as important and worthy.:)
As long as the area isn't uber busy, feel free to ask questions. I practically followed an MA at MAC around the other day as she was straightening up stuff. I'd wander off to look at something and then I'd think of something else I wanted to ask, I'd track her down and ask. She honestly didn't seem to have a problem at all, and might have even been mildly amused. -I was getting flustered with myself for continually bothering her with more and more questions, but it helped that she didn't seem annoyed by it. I imagine they are used to it, anyway.:)
That paragraph described how I feel to a T... I'm even about to turn the same age, too.
Thanks for all the answers--they're what I'd hoped :P I hadn't thought about perfume samples, either... I don't wear it often at all, but I wouldn't mind trying something new.
And you're right, our money spends the same. I always forget that when I'm in a "fancy" store, but damnit it's true.
I think I even felt that way when I was younger and slim/attractive. I've never had lots of money, so I felt inferior in that area, too...still do. Hell, I usually run around in blue jeans and baggy t-shirts with comic book characters on them, but to go to either MAC or Sephora, I dressed up a little more adult and feminine. -Isn't that sad? *chuckles*
I don't tend to wear perfumes either, but I like to try them out from time to time, and the sample sizes last me a good long while.:)
Exactly!! And it's funny...in an ironic way...I'm not the only over-weight girl I've seen in either MAC or Sephora. Heck, I was once waited on at Sephora by an employee who looked to be around my age, was bigger than I am, and wasn't wearing a spot of makeup. So honestly, I'm not entirely sure 'why' I allow myself to feel intimidated. There are a couple of MA's at MAC who are larger than I am, too. And it's not like I'm leaving the house without my make-up done, so again...there's really not much reason why I should feel this way. -I think it's partly because up 'till this year I've only ever bought cosmetics from WalMart and drugstores. I guess that's a portion of why I don't feel like I belong in a High-End cosmetics store. *shrugs*
Sorry for the novels here, I guess I like to talk.;D
Thanks!:)
Comment pirating here, but I have to say I know how you guys feel, too! :) It's a shame that there are unhelpful people working in retail, but the hell with them - if they aren't going to be nice and helpful, don't let them waste your time! Your money is just as green as anyone else's.
As for feeling out of place ... this is probably going to sound silly but here goes. I hope I explain this right! OK, if I saw a girl walk into Sephora who was wearing terrible or even no makeup, I would actually be proud and happy for her. By shopping there, it shows that she does care about her appearance and wants to learn (I think). She's making an effort to try to improve. WHYYY would anyone look down on that?! If anything, I would feel compelled to be extra friendly to make her feel comfortable, and maybe teach her some of what I know. I mean, I wouldn't go randomly accosting people in the street who need makeovers, but if someone wants to improve their looks, everyone should embrace that!
I think I need to work in Sephora - I was at the MUFE display once and I ended up helping a woman pick foundation, powder and eyeshadow!! lol :) Too bad that job's probably in high demand and I already have two!
I don't mind any "comment pirating".:D
I agree totally. I've worked in retail for 8 years and I was taught early on to 'always' be polite and courteous to your customers, no matter what. And that's how I've always been, and that's what I expect from retail workers. Unfortunately, not everyone was taught this rule.
Hell, I think it must have taken some real guts to walk into Sephora's like that, myself. I don't think I could have done it. But then, I'm very self-conscious when it comes to leaving the house without any makeup on, or if I think it doesn't look that great but I don't have the time to fix it. -But you've got a good point there.:)
Wow, that's pretty bad when a customer can't get any help from a store employee and has to turn to another customer for help/advice. :/ -But it's great that you were able to help her out, I bet she really appreciated it.:)
I'm not sure if I could work in a Sephora...I'd 'never' have a paycheck, I'd be paying THEM to let me work there!*laughing*
Thanks so much for commenting!!:D
I know this convo. was a few weeks ago, but I just came across this thread over on MakeUpAlley about other people feeling intimidated when going into dept. stores for m/a. Wanted to share it with you.:) http://makeupalley.com/m_100519821
Thanks! I don't feel so alone now :)
SAMPLEZ gah!!! I am sooo hitting up MAC and Sephora for samples! I love KenzoAmour's LE Indian Holi perfume, but I can't drop $70 on much of anything right now. I assume you went to the Galleria Sephora ... I wonder if the Boulevard JCP Sephora will do the same. :) Next up, EOTD with Young Punk!
If I could get samples of pretty much every little thing at both Sephora and MAC, I totally would!:D -Oooh, the "Indian Holi" perfume sounds interesting, what's the fragrance like? Sounds like it would be along the lines of musks. Yep, the Galleria. I'm not sure if I've been in the Boulevard Sephora, yet. There's a cosmetic/hair shop there called, 'Glamour Secrets' which sells these GORGEOUS mineral pigments. I got three good sized jars for $30. Here's a post I did on them a little while back: http://community.livejournal.com/makeupreviewed/66321.html#cutid1-If you're out that way again some time you should pop in and take a look. I think they are 5g jars and they are very nicely pigmented.:) If you're referring to the birthday lip gloss set, I think 'every' Sephora does it. Worth a try though.:) By JCP....is the Sephora in the JC Penney store? I honestly can't recall having seen one in that mall....but it's been a few months since I was last in there, so I could have just forgotten. -Not been in there very often. Yep, I definitely am planning an FOTD on the "Young Punk" soon.:D Thanks!:)
Great haul! That is a lot of fun new goodies to play with.
Yep!! I wish I'd gotten a larger sample of the MAC "Heritage Rouge" p/m, but it's still enough to try out.
I'm definitely wanting more of the "Fuschia" glitter -that stuff is GORGEOUS! -I have no idea why it's called "Fuschia" when it's clearly purple. o.O
Thanks for the comment!:D
That confused me when I was looking at the pics, too - that it was called Fuschia, but purple - wasn't sure if it was the other sample :)
I know -very odd.;/
At the MAC counter it looked more pinkish under their lighting, but here at home it looks like a true purple glitter. And in other photos it also looks very purple. -I think different people have different ideas as to what the color fuschia actually looks like. *laughs*
Thanks for the comment!:)
you made out like a bandit!!! what is MES? young punk looks awesome!!! we have the same tastes. i love all those lipglosses, so cute!!
I know and I was really surprised about that, too. I only expected to come home with the MES and maybe a couple of samples, this was great!:D It was my birthday all over again, very cool.:)
MES stands for 'Mineral Eye Shadow'. I'm not entirely sure how to explain it...it's a baked shadow that almost seems creamy, but it's a soft mineral powder shadow. I really like them, especially the dark blue part of the MAC "Sea & Sky" MES -GORGEOUS!:D
I can't wait to try out the "Young Punk" MES soon. Just have to figure out how I want to do a look with it, first.:)
Same tastes are great, you should enjoy my posts more this way. ;D
Oh, the lipglosses are really nice. I like the little bit of sparkle they have to them. :)
Thanks!!
ohh okay, those shadows sound awesome! dangit.. i was hoping it was a type of product i wouldn't like, but it is lmao. i wish i had millions of dollars to spend on makeup! i'm getting addicted all over again.
I know what you mean!:)
I've been getting some great makeup through my swaps on MakeUpAlley.com -you may want to look into that for yourself, too.:)
mua is addicting too! i haven't been on there in forever, though, because the shipping racks up for me and i end up spending too much lol. i'm going to have my own makeup sale in october and then any extra money i have is going towards xmas and then after i do my xmas shopping, i won't feel so guilty about spending my money lol. this year flew by so fast!!!
I hear ya'! I don't know if you use this, but I've found that I can save a little bit on shipping costs when I do my shipping labels and all that through paypal/USPS.com -Honestly, I guess at the weight of my packages...trying to be fair, but I don't have a scale for packages, yet. I don't tend to pay more than $2 at most for a bubble mailer with an item or two in it shipped within the US. And that includes the .19 for DC#. Here's a code I use: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now-just log into your paypal and then paste this code into your browser and start filling out your shipping label info. Fast and easy:) I know that with all of my swapping I've already dropped $100+ on my makeup in shipping costs, but when I'm paying only about $2 for a MAC shadow, or something like that, I KNOW I'm saving SO much more $$ than I had bought it from a sale online or at retail cost. That's what makes me feel ok about it.:D If that code expires at some point (not sure if it will, I found it on some site), just google around for some paypal/usps cheat code for shipping. This is the 3rd I've used so far this year. The first site is still saved on my other computer, the 2nd one's site went down, and now here's this one. It seems the older I get the faster time flies by. Very depressing, sadly.:( Thanks!:)
Oh yeah, and can't wait to see your m/a sale next month! Hopefully I'll have a job by then and be able to buy something.:D | |
